What is Day of the Drum you ask? It's an event happening on Embarcadero Park North (right behind Seaport Village) this Sunday. And it actually has a much longer name. Are you ready? WorldBeat Cultural Center's Annual International Dance & Music Festival/ Day of the Drum 2009. Yup, that is a mouthful. But the long name is warranted because there is a long list of fun activities!
The Day of the Drum will consist of a day long celebration focusing on world cultural drumming and dancing that honors the life and legacy of singer/activist Miriam Makeba, known as "Mama Africa". The South African native, Miriam Makeba was exiled from her homeland for 30 years for her political vies and opposition to apartheid.
The festival includes:
- Local dance and music groups
- Cultural artists
- Singing and dancing for children and adults
- African arts & crafts
- African-centric food booths
- Over 20 African-centric vendors and exhibits
I don't know about you but this seems like a lot of fun to me!
